What are Cosmeceuticals?
Cosmeceuticals is a term coined by Albert Kligman MD in the 1990’s referring to a category of skin care products that are a hybrid between cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. This not a legal term and is not officially recognized so there are officially no specific criteria for products to be included in this category in Australia. The term however is engrained in the lay press, medical literature and commonly used by consumers. It is a term that is generally reserved when referring to enhanced skin care products containing key ingredients that provide beneficial effects on the skin’s appearance while also promoting healthy skin. These products provide benefits above and beyond simple cosmetics and are used to improve the visible signs of aging skin in addition to other skin conditions such as acne and hyperpigmentation.
Why use Cosmeceuticals?
Cosmeceutical regimens are usually based on science with active ingredients undergoing some degree of scientific research. Moisturizers and serums containing ingredients like Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Retinol, AHA’s, Peptides, Stem cell extracts, various antioxidants, etc have undergone extensive research and are commonly used in this superior category of cosmetics.
Cosmeceuticals also provide more potent and sophisticated formulations when compared to regular cosmetics in order to achieve more noticeable effects and are thus considered more effective. As they are more potent compared to regular cosmetics they should be introduced gradually to allow the skin to build its tolerance to high strength creams.
